The U.S. Ski Orienteering Championships are coming to the East coast, and you don't want to miss the action!  Similar to the Sierra Ski-o week, the U.S. Champs are part of a larger ski orienteering festival.  There will be events in eastern NY in the week before the event, and there will be two more events in southern VT in the week after the event.

The Championships will feature skiers on the U.S. Ski Orienteering Team, as well as their closest competitors trying to make the team - the competition will be fierce!  However, there is also room for novice ski orienteers to test the waters - Bermans' O-Supply has donated six map holders for skiers to demo while racing in the Championships, and a good skier with decent navigation skills might surprise themselves with how well they do!  There will be a model event at Craftsbury on Friday, for skiers to figure out how to ski with the map and get used to the terrain.

One of the unique aspects of ski orienteering is that it is dependent upon the map being "fresh" for everybody - this means that the area is embargoed for this winter for people who want to be considered for the national title.  The embargo means that you may not train on the Craftsbury Outdoor Center trails, but you may participate in races at that location.  So it is no problem to do your usual Craftsbury races earlier in the season, but please don't go to Craftsbury to train if you also want to be considered for the national title.  This is enforced through the honor system.

E-punching will be used, and rental punches will be available if you do not have your own.  There will also be 14 mapholders available for rental, on a first-come-first-served basis.

We'll see you there!
